Tura is one of the largest towns in the West Garo Hills district. The name of this town is derived from one of the mythological goddesses, Durama Imbama. Goddess Durama was known to be one of the most beautiful, rich, and powerful amongst the three goddesses. The other two Goddesses were named Koasi Minduri and Aratcha Rongbare. According to legend, the lovely Goddess Durama fought a war with Goddess Songdu. She is also known as the Brahmaputra. However, at the end of the war, the Goddess Durama emerged victoriously.
Dura was the original name for this town. During the British rule, however, it was misidentified as Tura. Since then, this location has hardly been referred to as Dura. It may interest you to know that the locals believed Durama was the town's residing deity. She is said to live in the hills all around.
Guwahati is the only way to get to Tura from anywhere in the world. It has a railway station and an airport, both of which are close to Tura Village. It's only a 5-hour drive from there. You can take the bus, or hire a cab, or a car rental to Tura. The distance between Guwahati and Tura is 175 kilometers, making for a long and splendid drive.
