Nongkhyllem lies in the West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya at an altitude of 1630 m. The area has many species of flora and fauna including elephants, hoolock gibbons, etc. It is located between 25° 55' to 26° 12' N latitude and 91° 47' to 91° 52' E longitude. The place has many medicinal plants diversity which is being studied by researchers.
It is best known for the golden langurs which are found in plenty along with black gibbons, Asiatic wild dogs, giant flying squirrels etc. The sanctuary spreads over an area of around 185sqkm but getting access to this place may prove difficult during monsoons when all roads remain closed due to waterlogging. However, one can enjoy boating facilities inside the sanctuary in winters when there are no rains.
The best time to visit Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary is between October and March.
