Mawsmai Caves and Waterfalls is another beautiful tourist spot near Shillong to see waterfalls in Meghalaya. This waterfall forms part of a cave system that has seven entrances leading to it. One such entrance leads to the falls named "King's fall" after the Raja of Dinajpur (William King). The falls is about 25 meters high and it flows into a large pool below.
The cave was discovered by William King (Raja of Dinajpur) during his hunts for tigers in this area. The Raja got entrapped within the cave due to a sudden rock falling off, which led to its discovery. Later, he confided about its existence with his friend Richard Yendell who further passed it on to his brother-in-law Captain R Newham, who brought it into the limelight. After capturing these falls during World War II, Japanese troops were using them as their base camp and later the British Army captured this place from them.
Post-monsoon is the best time to visit Mawsmai Cave and waterfall due to ample rains that form great cascading streams and falls.
