Mawlynnong Enchanted Forest

Mawlynnong Enchanted Forest is span approx 100 sq km. The most striking feature of this 100 square kilometre forest is that it remains under permanent vegetation cover. Although not as huge as the Mawphlang Sacred Grove, it has similar attractions and wildlife species.

Mawlynnong is a famous tourist destination in the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya, India. It has been declared as the cleanest village in Asia by Discover India Magazine. This enchanting village is known for its natural beauty and scenic splendour. The small stream cascading down from the hills, which flow through the lush green forests, is filled with a wide range of tropical fruits and medicinal plants.

Mawlynnong Sanctuary in East Khasi Hills District is a home to Golden Langur and Pygmy Hog which are found only in this part of the world. Many rare species of orchids and ferns can also be seen in the area.

Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has imposed a ban on the entry of visitors into sacred groves and other areas to prevent over-exploitation and degradation of natural resources in these regions. The biodiversity of this area is great and, if it is properly protected, it will be a treasure-trove for generations to come.

Mawphlang is located about 160 km from Guwahati and can be reached by road via Shillong. From Shillong, the distance is about 100km, Mylliem village (the entry point) can be reached in about 3 hours’ drive.
