As one enters Kudengrim, a charming hamlet perched in the West Jaintia Hills, the paddy fields give way to steep slopes. Few attractions and experiences are available, with knowledgeable and friendly locals ready to assist you. This place is approx. 94 km from Shillong by road.
The primary attraction of Kudengrim is a twenty-minute walk from the main settlement. Before you reach a spectacular broad-brimmed, segmented waterfall that looks like it came straight out of an adventure film, make your way through a peaceful forest and beneath a thick canopy. A short walk from the waterfall is a lovely sight of Meghalaya's famous living architecture - the Kudengrim Living Root Bridge. The two-story bridge made of woven roots of the Ficus Elastica trees, which are the country's largest guardians of forests, may be viewed.
Walk along the stream and you will be welcomed with yet another lovely waterfall that falls like a curtain over the natural granite walls. Prepare to get wet as you trek along bamboo pathways and streams to reach the Mukhre Step Falls, which completes this picturesque walk's trio of waterfalls. Take in spectacular views from the bamboo skywalk and admire the cascading water, which makes for a perfect picture if you time it right.
Kudengrim might be off the beaten track but that's precisely what makes it such an attractive destination for those looking to get away from the crowds and spend some time in nature.
The surrounding hills of Kudengrim are known for their abundance of iron ore. This has prompted many to begin mining activities in this region, despite the obvious environmental implications.
Kudengrim is also known for its lovely church and bold experiment with bamboo construction - the St. Peter's Church made entirely out of locally harvested bamboo can be found here. You might want to check it out if you're interested in witnessing a different architectural style.
The roads are not in great shape here, but the drive is scenic and well worth it if you're looking for some solitude. Kudengrim might be situated deep within the jungle, but it's definitely one of Meghalaya's most underrated destinations.
You can enjoy many outdoor activities here, including a hidden waterfall and a walking trail that brings you to three waterfalls.
Walking is required for those who want the entire Kudengrim experience, so be sure to have the correct footwear and clothing on you. We usually recommend that guests look for homestay options in the village itself, rather than travelling outside of it because this allows you to relax while still seeing the beautiful scenery.
