Dainthlen is a thrilling gushing waterfall that slices through the difficult rocks and the lofty plateau of Sohra before cascading into verdant woods. Dainthlen is also significant to the Khasis tribe.
During the dry seasons, you can negotiate the difficult, rocky pot-holed river course leading to the falls. This area is said to be where a tremendous battle was waged, according to local folklore. The Thlen was a colossal serpent who embodied evil and was eventually eradicated by Sohra's locals, who were once an ancient village now known as the Sohra Plateau.
At Dainthlen, you'll see the rocks worn smooth by water and floods. The Dainthlen Falls' roaring din, the wide-open vista, the neighbouring hillocks, and the fickle winds that constantly blow here provide a suitable backdrop to this huge legend.
The Dainthlen Falls plummet 80 meters straight down. The viewpoints are on either side of the falls, allowing you to get up close and personal with the natural beauty from behind a barrier. You may also go hiking in the area around Dainthlen. From stray cattle to uncommon birds, you'll encounter a variety of delights as you travel along the meandering hills and watercourses, which are punctuated by tiny bumps and streams.
If you're coming from Shillong, you'll need to take a short diversion before entering the city of Sohra (Cherrapunjee). On your journey, you'll see many beautiful locations where you can pull over and take in the beauty. Resorts and picnic grounds are also available in the region. Wei Saw Dong Falls, which is downstream of Dainthlen Falls, is another breathtaking sight.
Dainthlen is about 56 kilometres from Shillong. The journey will take about two hours. It's a relatively easy walk to reach the Dainthlen falls from here or you can always take a taxi from Shillong - they have an agreement with the tourism services so it won't be very expensive.
