Chendeh Falls

This waterfall is located about 8 km from Mynso town in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya State. It falls down from a height of around 15m and flows all year round. It is also called 'Umngot River Waterfall' as it falls into the Umngot river below it.

Legend of Chendeh Waterfalls

A story behind this waterfall, as told by locals living nearby is that there used to live a young prince named Chendeh who was very wealthy and ruled a vast area around his kingdom. He was madly in love with princesses from another nearby kingdom but could not meet her as he had no means for transportation for meeting her.

One day he happened to see a large turtle who told him of his plans to visit the princess and Chendeh decided to keep it in his palace, feed it and ride on its back for a visit. The turtle had other plans and one day when the young prince was sleeping, the turtle quickly left the palace, leaving the prince behind.

In this way, the prince could never meet with his beloved princess from another kingdom. It is believed that when he woke up from sleep that morning, he started crying with such sadness that some tears fell into the Umngot river which flows far below this fall and formed a small pool at its foot. When the king found out about what had happened, he tried searching for his son but failed to locate him. So he built a palace here and visited daily with his servants looking for solutions to bring back his son alive. But nothing came of it and the king died at the same place. Since then, this fall has been known as 'Chendeh Falls'.
