Baghmara and Tura are a couple of wildlife sanctuaries situated in the East Khasi Hills district. These forests have been known to have tigers roaming their territory. The clouded leopard is also found here but they are not so common. Apart from animals, this place is known for its rare flora and fauna.
The forests surrounding these sanctuaries are home to many endemic species of orchids. The Indian holly (Phyllanthus emblica) also shares habitat with the wild animals here. Also known as 'Amla' in the local dialect, it is a popular fruit in the Indian subcontinent used to cure many ailments. It is sold at a very high price because of its limited availability and hence fetching a good profit for the indigenous people who have been safeguarding this forested area from intruders for decades now.
The best time to visit Baghmara & Tura Wildlife Sanctuaries is from October to April.
