Northeast Regatta Kicks Off At The Umiam Lake in Shillong

Meghalaya's Umiam Lake was filled with excitement and enthusiasm as the North East Regatta 2023 set sail on Saturday. The event was inaugurated by the state's Tourism Minister, Paul Lyngdoh, at the stunning Umiam Watersports Complex. With over 100 participants from more than 10 states and 12 clubs, this five-day spectacle is not just a race but a platform for young sailors to showcase their skills and take their passion to the next level.

The Indian Army and Naval Services have also joined the event, adding to the thrill and excitement of this thrilling competition. The Umiam Sailors Club, the first club of its kind in the state collaborated with the Meghalaya tourism department to launch The North East Regetta 2023 initiative. The regatta aims to promote sailing, diving, parasailing, and other water sports activities.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh expressed his hope that the event would inspire young sailors to excel in the sport, not just nationally but also internationally. He also announced that the state government would introduce a yacht and a lake cruise to accelerate tourism in the state.

Colonel Vivek Kalavat, head of the Technical Committee, praised the state government's enthusiasm for organizing this event for the first time. The weather may be unpredictable, but the sailors are prepared for anything, as they will take advantage of the wind and rain to make the competition even more fun.

The North East Regetta 2023 promises to be an exciting event filled with adrenaline, passion, and talent. It's an opportunity for sailors to show off their skills and for the audience to enjoy a thrilling water sports competition.
