The Meghalaya Cabinet has given its approval to a land deal that will allow over 1,200 families who have been living on government property illegally for many years to move onto "permanent" homes.

The administration has seen "a significant increase in funds" as a result of the agreement, according to the CM of Meghalaya. The deal will be a "win-win" for both the government and the signatories, he added.

"We will sign a long-term lease with around 1,200 residents of Warimagre and Baghmara villages. The state government will retain title to the property," said the CM  after the cabinet meeting this Monday.

Under the proposal, no more than 10000 Sq.Ft. of land will be given to each family.

"The current situation is that these settlers have been in this place for many years. Eviction would create a law-and-order scenario. The greatest solution is to keep ownership in the hands of the state, which can profit from a long-term lease."
