Garo Nokrek Dance Festival

The Garo tribe has a special dance called the Nokrek dance, generally celebrated during December. The men put on masks and take part in a folk dance which is accompanied by music from drums, flutes and bugle horns. During the festival, all members of the community will gather together at a designated site within their village.

Women often hold hands and sing as they follow the men who are dancing with masks over their faces. Dances during this festival include jinggit gara (masked dances), zaphai gara (flag-dance) and ngapang lipu gara (stick dances). During Gara Nokrek, blacksmiths have a special dance called moloi.
