Garo Hills Students Fail to Top Meghalaya's Education Board Exams; Below State Average

The recently announced results of the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination in Meghalaya have left many disappointed, particularly in the Garo Hills region. For the first time in a while, no students from the Garo Hills region were among the top rankers in the Science and Commerce streams.

The results were declared on Tuesday and showed that a total of 3,635 students appeared for the Science stream, out of which 2,866 students passed, resulting in an average pass percentage of 78.84. Similarly, in the Commerce stream, a total of 2,383 students appeared, and 1,890 students passed, with a total pass percentage of 79.31.

The best-performing district in the Commerce stream was the East Garo Hills, which topped the state percentage-wise, but only 67 students passed out of a total of 70 who appeared. West Garo Hills followed with 254 students appearing and 168 clearing the exams, recording an overall pass percentage of 66.14. In North Garo Hills, 21 students passed out of 50 who appeared. However, no students appeared from South Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills.

In the Science stream, 595 students appeared from West Garo Hills, out of which 405 cleared, with a 68.07 pass percentage. Similarly, of 101, 53 students (East Garo Hills) cleared, and of 13, 10 students cleared (South Garo Hills). Off 67, 39 cleared in North Garo Hills, and of 20, 18 cleared in South West Garo Hills.

The HSSLC examination is a crucial stepping stone for students in Meghalaya, as it determines their eligibility for higher studies in various fields. The results have left many students and their families disappointed, especially those from the Garo Hills region who were hoping to achieve top rankings in the state.
